Country's Exporters Lose Anti-DDT Battle

Uganda's exporters have lost a long running battle with government over malaria controlling insecticide DDT.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) last week okayed the use of DDT, which will now be sprayed in every house in the country to kill mosquitoes in an effort to control malaria.

Uganda: Exporters Protest DDT Use

THE Government is increasingly under attack from exporters' associations over its decision to spray DDT in September.

The National Environment Management Authority recently approved the re-introduction of DDT for interior spraying to fight malaria. The exporters are worried about its impact on Uganda's markets.

"We are scared because it will affect our exports to Europe if DDT residues are detected in the agricultural products," commented the chairman of the Uganda Flower Exporters' Association, Jacques Schrier.

Uganda: Another Dutch Firm Interested

FLOWER Direct, one of Holland's biggest cut flower importers, has expressed interest in Uganda's new high-altitude roses, the latest addition to floriculture products.

Johan Hassing, Flower Direct's managing director, said he would like to buy from Uganda because the roses match the ones from Kenya that have been preferred.

Uganda: Country Targets $200 Million in Flower Exports

Earnings from Uganda's flower industry are set to double in the next five years.

Currently, the industry produces 7,300 tonnes worth US$65 million for export annually. But officials in the floriculture sector say for the industry to expand and more than double, more local and foreign investors are needed to give this boost.

But luring these investors to Uganda will only depend on how fast the government can act on promises of providing support and incentives to the industry.

Just last year, Uganda lost $30 million in flower investments to Ethiopia.
